Cornbread outside of the US might not be common, but it’s easy to make and is an excellent BBQ side. Check out our easy cornbread recipe.

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Servings: 4+
  • Prep time: 10 minutes
  • Cooking time: 20 minutes
  • Resting time: None
  • Total time: 30 minutes

Ingredients list:

  • 1/2 cup of self-raising flour
  • 3/4 cup of cornmeal
  • 1 tbsp of baking soda
  • Pinch of salt
  • 1/3 cup of melted butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup of liquid/runny honey
  • 1/2 cup of beer (dealer’s choice)

    INSTRUCTIONS:

1: Grab a mixing bowl and add the self-raising flour, cornmeal, baking soda, and salt. Mix it dry.

2: Heat your oven to 350f/180c.

3: Add the egg, butter, and honey and mix again. Then, gradually add your beer until you get a smooth consistency.

4: Once you have a smooth batter, you can also add grated cheese (we like to use around 1/2 cup) or anything else you’d like to make your cornbread more exciting. Think sausage, jalapenos, or sugar if you want a sweeter taste.

5: Grease a baking tin, pour in your mix evenly, and let it cook for 20 minutes. You’ll be looking for a nice brown crust. If you’re unsure if it’s cooked, gently press the top in the middle — you want it soft but not at the point of collapse!

6: It’s as simple as that. Allow it to cool for a few minutes, slice, and enjoy!

There are no hard-and-fast rules for cornbread, and while ours above tries to toe the line between sweet and savoury, below are some other recipes online that we’ve enjoyed:

    1. Classic Southern Cornbread:

Simply Recipes offers a Southern-style variation of cornbread, baked without added sugar, for those who appreciate the robust, savory flavor of traditional cornbread. Yellow cornmeal, buttermilk, eggs, and a little bacon grease or butter for richness are used, making it a simple recipe. The use of a preheated cast-iron skillet gives the cornbread a delightful, crisp, crunchy, and golden crust, which sets it apart. Still moist yet crumbly, the inside part is perfect for absorbing liquid. Some people may find it surprising that classic Southern cornbread is salty and rustic, but its defining quality is the absence of sugar. It tastes best when warmed with a dollop of butter or alongside black-eyed peas and collard greens.

    2. Moist & Sweet Cornbread:

If you are more of a “cornbread should be cake” sort of person, Modern Honey’s recipe is your go-to recipe. Both butter and oil are combined to avoid dryness and add depth to the cornbread making it ultra-moist. For sweetness, sugar is used generously and honey is added to provide a rich and slightly sticky texture that goes wonderfully with spicy or smoky main dishes. Although it still has enough structure to be cut into squares, the crumb is soft and light, almost like a dessert bread. It’s a favorite at potlucks and holidays when you’re serving your family or friends who like a sweeter twist with the main course.

    3. Low-Budget Cornbread:

The Budget Bytes recipe is a quick and practical one that doesn’t sacrifice flavor. Made for ease and affordability, this cornbread is a perfect mix between sweet and savory using basic pantry ingredients like yellow cornmeal, flour, milk, eggs, and a little bit of sugar. The simplicity and speed of the process are impressive. There’s no need for a cast-iron skillet or hard-to-find ingredients. It’s a great side for weekday dinners or a basic addition to soup. This is the type of recipe you can make without much thought — and it turns out perfect every time.
