Moorland fires are of serious concern during BBQ season, so officials are taking action.
Bradford Council is about to extend a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), which prohibits lighting fires, including campfires, fireworks, and barbecues, on moorlands and public open spaces.
Due to continued wildfire risk, the order, which was first put into effect after the Ilkley Moor fire in 2019, is again up for renewal and expansion, as reported by the BBC.
The initial ban was prompted by the 2019 fire, which occurred within 200 meters of residential homes.
Although there haven’t been any serious wildfires in the district since, council records show that arson was probably not the primary cause of the fires in the area but the careless use of grills and open flames.
Police and council officers are empowered under the PSPO to confiscate any items that can cause fires, such as fireworks and portable barbecues. Criminal penalties and hefty fines can result after violations.
A consultation with locals, landowners, and associated parties is underway.
